An Obit for Hillary?

She has sheathed her sword and, in the best tradition of Anglo Saxon fair play, complimented her former rival. Whether or not they will be on the same ticket will be decided at the party convention in August. For his part Barack Obama has told his supporters to stop putting out rumors that he will never accept the senator from New York as his vice-president, perhaps due to the baggage she carries of a husband whose role, in the 18 month long Democratic primary campaign, has been more harmful than good. Barack Obama is now waiting for the delegate dust to settle. Then he will make his decision. He has to evaluate the pros and cons of an alliance that many think could be of little benefit– echoes of Al Gore’s vice presidential choice. As for the hoped for return to power of the Democratic Party, it will be an uphill battle for Obama. It could be quite difficult to get the support of the 18 million people who voted for Hillary against a black man of Kenyan origin on his father’s side. Many Democrats now say they have decided to vote in November for the “less dangerous” candidate. By this they mean John McCain, with his boring speeches and lack of new ideas, his overshadowing by Bush (now at the lowest possible ranking in terms of approval ratings), his age and his fight against melanoma. And this doesn’t even include his bad temper which has caused him a lot of problems since his youth. But Hillary Clinton’s speech at the National Building Museum before thousands of enthusiastic supporters was a true turning point. More than once she passionately stated the need to elect Barack Obama as the nation’s next president. And she did it in a strong, convincing manner and without resorting to conventioneering, was able to turn around an initially skeptic audience. With great oratorical efficacy, Hillary reminded the audience that these primaries represent a revolution in American society because showed great support (36 million votes) for both a woman and a black man as candidates for the White House. She repeatedly stated the need for universal health insurance – a basic theme of her entire political life beginning from when she first set foot in the White House as First Lady. Hillary speech in Washington was a great one. Now we have to wait and see if Obama’s choice for vice president will unite or split the Democratic Party once and for all.

“What Happened”

This is the title of the book written by Scott McClellan who was for three years George W. Bush’s spokesperson at the White House and before that for him as governor of Texas. McClellan is not the latest person to jump ship, but he had been a very faithful supporter of the President and had always served in total adoration. From 2003 to 2006 Scott McClellan covered the most important White House events, from the occupation of Iraq, to the revelations of the inhuman treatment in the Abu Ghraib prisons and in Guantanamo (by the way, it seems that to avoid further problems, American authorities are now using war ships as prisons so prisoners suspected of terrorism can be interrogated at will). What happened to this mild and rotund person who looks more like a parish priest than an aggressive pr man? In his book, McClellan claims to have realized only after his leaving the White House (in reality he was kicked out by the new chief of staff Josh Bolten –who didn’t even give him time to protest) that the “bubble” surrounding Bush contained dangerous characters such as VP Cheney, Rumsfeld and company who conspired to hide the truth from the President. For three whole years, McClellan says he was unaware that instead of telling the truth to the nation he was actually feeding it propaganda. Scott McClellan also accuses the journalists accredited to the White House of being too eager to accept the Administration’s declarations – or rather his own. But this is not true because after every press conference McClellan would go back to his office angered by the aggressiveness of his journalism colleagues. The truth is that in his role as spokesperson Scott McClellan was hated by the White House press corps because he would not answer questions and retreated behind embarrassing silence and “no comment.” This is the complete opposite from his predecessor Ari Fleischer who in turn was kicked out from the White House because he was accused of telling too much to the press. McClellan, in addition, found himself having to give evasive answers when the Valerie Plame scandal exploded. Plame is the undercover CIA agent and wife of former ambassador Wilson whose identity was made public thanks to leaks traced back to Cheney’s chief of staff (he was sentenced to two years in prison and immediately pardoned by Bush because apparently he thought the sentence was too severe).

Over and above his personal travails, Scott McClellan’s case is evidence of how the job of spokesperson (a category invented by Americans) is a very difficult and insecure job. There are two types of people who swim in the often murky pond of press relations. The first consists of people who naively believe in their bosses, adore them and consider them the stuff of myths. They are ready to throw themselves into fire for their bosses and spew out whatever they are told.
Some of them are burdened by a belief that their job does not consist in a non holds barred defense of the fort, but rather in assisting journalist colleagues in performing their own profession. And so, when they can, these people try to play fair even if sometimes they favor one person over another by leaking confidential information (with obvious prior approval from the boss). Then these same people realize that they have been used for base purposes (and this applies not only to politics but also the corporate world). These people find themselves bypassed by the leaks that the boss’s inner circle use for their own purposes – but have to account for them in person with the press. The result is embarrassing situations for which it is useless to protest since, most of the time, the boss was well aware of these maneuvers. And then there are the scandals that erupt when a boss says something to a journalist “friend” that he thought was off the record – a term that in Italy is practically unknown. The second type consists of those who self identify as royal sons of you know who. These professionals follow the rules of the countries where they operate. They offer gifts to the colleagues who work for outlets of interest and organize sumptuous junkets abroad for journalists and their significant others that result in puff pieces upon their return to Italy. In the US, since few journalists will even accept a free lunch, spokespersons curry the favor of journalists by feeding them information not otherwise available and based on which slanted articles are written and at times Pulitzer prizes are won. That’s what happened to Judith Miller of The New York Times, who was close buddies with the Cheney and company gang. Her articles on the war in Iraq created an impression that was far from reality and caused serious difficulties for the paper when the truth finally surfaced, despite the three months Miller spent in jail to avoid revealing the name of her high level White House source. Armed with confidential information, these spokespersons at times engage in insider trading for personal profit and are rarely caught. To this category also belong those who having collected information on any skeletons hidden in their bosses’ closets, use them to advance their own personal and financial interests. In the US, at the end of a presidential term, spokespersons often write books with the hope that they will be best sellers. The greater the number of spicy details, the greater are the sales. But for the majority of those dedicated to the profession of spokesperson, it’s a lousy job. Anyone who works in symbiosis with a political or corporate leader is a marked man (or woman). When a boss falls, the spokesperson goes over the cliff with the added burden that the poor slob will always be recognized as, “Oh, you’re the one who worked with so and so…” and professional abilities, assuming there were any, will be of no account.

Prodi according to Giuliano Amato

What follows is an excerpt from an interview with Giuliano Amato by Aldo Cazullo of the Corrieredella Sera. Amato has decided to retire from politics after having served as prime minister and deputy prime minister in the last Romano Prodi government. “Prodi will be remembered in history for a number of reasons. He is the Italian president who brought Italy into the euro monetary system and is the European president who opened the doors to the Eastern European countries. Above all he is responsible for the creation of the Democratic Party which ended the perennial and destructive divisiveness of the so-called reformists. It took his stubbornness as a cyclist to accomplish this, but it really was a turning point. And as often happens, once a goal has been achieved the product is turned over to others to carry on. These are his accomplishments, what he has achieved.” And what about Berlusconi’s? “To date it’s been more promises than achievements. Now he has five years and a more favorable climate in which to accomplish things.”

Multiple Wives Equals Paradise

Having many wives means one will go to paradise, although it’s not clear if the wives will be able to go too. This is the commandment followed by the Texas sect knows as FDLS (Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints). Polygamy is accepted and practiced by some Moslems, and is a precept of this Mormon splinter group. The Mormons are very powerful in the US and have renounced polygamy. But the FDLS, led by Warren Jeffs, have not. A phone call to the police by someone claiming to be a young girl forced to live in a FDLS compound in Texas resulted in a raid as sexual relations with persons under the age of 16 are illegal. It appears the call might have been hoax and there are rumors it might have originated with Mormons hostile to Warren Jeffs. In any event the police went into action. Jeffs is in prison for sexual abuse of several young girls. According to investigators there are photographs showing this leader’s interest in his flock was not very spiritual: some show him kissing a young girl on the mouth and others show him embracing under age females. The sect leader and his lawyers say it’s a case of spiritual marriages – along the lines of Catholic nuns saying they are married to the Lord. As for the raid: 450 children belonging to the FDLS sect were removed from the compound and placed in foster homes throughout Texas. Then the court ruled the children should be returned to their mothers. The decision took into consideration the physical and mental condition of the children who were forcibly removed from their mothers and thrown into a world where they have learned to watch TV (prohibited by their sect) and other modern customs unknown to the FDLS compound. CNN has given ample coverage to the sect. Larry King interviewed women and men from the compound and shown images of a totally autonomous place with its own schools, medical facilities, and farms. The women are dressed in ways that not even American nuns would accept. They uniformly wear long pastel colored prairie dresses, wear their hair in large buns and use no makeup. The women interviewed by Larry King said, obviously, that the accusations made against their leader are groundless and that they do not marry off women under the age of 16. As for polygamy, they expressed surprise at the furor surrounding it since they say that it is widely practiced in the US, despite being illegal. Mention is made of Latin American countries where a sign of a macho man is to have two or three families.

Lorenzo’s Oil

The doctors said Lorenzo Odone, age 6, would die within a year or two because he suffered from Adrenoleukodystrophy (ADL), a rare and incurable disease. His father Augusto and mother Michaela decided to reject this death sentence. Augusto, a World Bank executive, started to do research. He gathered endless amounts of information, surfed the Internet (which was then a novelty) and consulted with leading specialist worldwide. ADL is a genetic disease that damages the myelin that insulates the nervous systems of the brain. Lorenzo died a few days ago, just after his thirtieth birthday. His parents devoted to their lives to their son who could no longer see or communicate with them but, as they said, was still with them. It seems Lorenzo survived more than twenty years beyond what doctors had forecast thanks to an olive oil extract his father created based on his many years of research. This mild but love driven man even made it to Hollywood. Susan Sarandon and Nick Nolte played the roles of Lorenzo’s parents in a 1992 movie “Lorenzo’s Oil” which told the story of how they were able to convince the scientific world of the power of this oil in the treatment of ADL despite the lack of any precedents. The movie was a moderate success and Susan Sarandon received an Oscar nomination for her performance. A study published in 2005 indicates that the oil treatment patented by Augusto Odone has delayed the progression of the disease in 85 boys afflicted by the disease. Lorenzo died of pneumonia caused by the accidental trapping of food in his respiratory system. His father says he died quietly and without suffering. August Odone will go to New York where his son’s remains will be cremated and laid to rest with those of his mother who died in 2000. Then Augusto Odone will sell his Fairfax, VA home and return to Italy. He plans to write a book to tell the story of how he prolonged his son’s life for so many years, thanks to his oil and, above all, his love and that of Michaela who dedicated her life to Lorenzo.

Neapolitan Mobs

Molotov cocktails thrown at firemen and policemen. Buses set on fire. Caissons welded together to make barriers. Objects and rocks launched. Ubiquitous women carrying babies and screaming curses in heavy dialect. Professional agitators. This is the image of Naples on TV at a distance of thousands of miles. This is how the people of Naples express their civic disagreements with government authorities. Generalizations tend to be exaggerations and this writer has always had a weakness for the inhabitants of Italy’s intellectual capital. But as they say on this side of the Atlantic: enough is enough! If people want to protest in the US they have to give notice to the police so cops can be assigned to the event. Strikers, protesters etc. must keep moving otherwise their demonstration is accused of blocking traffic which is a legal violation. In addition, protests, with accompanying banners and noise makers, must take place within assigned areas. If I do not obey a stop sign and am caught by the police, I can be followed right to my garage (as happened yesterday to an acquaintance), given a heavy fine and a judge can also sentence me to several days of driving school. During the recent Memorial Day weekend we saw police cars that had stopped drivers in Virginia and Maryland who had been caught speeding or committing other driving violations. Men and women were forced to exit their cars, stand with their hands crossed behind their heads and get patted down to make sure they weren’t armed. If anyone protests, out come the handcuffs and off you go to jail. Some might say this is not democratic, that it cannot be tolerated in civilized society. But, as Panebianco writes in the Corriere della Sera, how is a democratic society supposed ensure respect for the law? Should anarchy, the talent that Neapolitans have for centuries exhibited, be allowed to prevail? The absurd thing is that Neapolitans do not want to deal with their garbage. They don’t want landfills nearby, they don’t want incinerators. They want to send their trash to Germany (and let the government pay for it) or they want landfills opened in other regions. Basically this is not a matter of who is in charge be it Berlusconi or Veltroni, what is needed here, to use an academic term, are balls.

Hurray for Nuclear Power

Italy has realized that it is in hot water, meaning that the peninsula is surrounded by electrical nuclear power plants at its borders from which, as in the case of the French ones, it imports (at a high price) a large amount of the resources needed to keep the country going. This reminds us of Romano Prodi’s outrage, then president of IRI, when Italians (fooled by insane pseudo-ecological and leftist propaganda) by a large margin approved a referendum that prohibited the construction of new nuclear power plants and called for the dismantling of the few ones in existence. In the US there is a lot of talk about danger from Iran and the nuclear power plants it says are being built for electricity and that detractors instead say could be used for nuclear warfare. Meanwhile President Bush goes to Saudi Arabia to sell nuclear power plants to the world’s largest oil producing nation. France, Russia, etc. for their part are committed to promoting and selling these “products” to developing nations. The forecasts of a nuclear catastrophe are no longer considered worthy of Hollywood movie plots. The powers that be in Washington confidently whisper that the sale of nuclear technology to Saudi Arabia is necessitated by the hope that sooner or later the Moslems (Sunni and Shiites) will kill each other off, thus taking care of the problem for the western world. Obviously Dr. Strangelove is still in vogue.

Filthy Passengers

This is a warning for people flying coach in the US. Do not look too closely in the pocket of the seat in front of you: you might find dirty diapers, nail clippings, melted chocolate bars, used Kleenex, chewing gum and even condoms. It has become normal for the passenger next to you to put his naked feet on the seat and blow his nose on the blanket that will be used on the next flight. And then there are the couples overcome with passion during night flights who engage in erotic practices in first class with no regard for the protests of their fellow passengers. Most American flight attendants clean up after every flight, but it mainly consists of gathering up whatever trash is sticking out of the seat pockets and not a thorough cleaning. That is done only every 30 days. Psychologists say that passenger bad behavior is a reaction to the lack of service offered by the airlines. But some of this behavior would not be tolerated in a restaurant or any other public place.

Soldiers Killed by their Showers

According to official Pentagon sources the numbers of American soldiers dying is increasing and it’s not only in combat. One of the most absurd situations is that of GI’s who are being electrocuted while in the shower. The company that did the installations denies any responsibility because it says the maintenance was done by third parties.
In addition, the number of soldiers committing suicide is rapidly getting larger. Many soldiers have been sent to the front lines even though their medical records indicate that they are suffering from deep depression. The absurdity of a war whose reasons are not shared by the young people in uniform, the loss of close friends and the separation from their families are among the reasons blamed for the wave of suicides. To end their misery they shoot themselves with their machine guns. And this too is America. Unfortunately.
