Svolta epocale nel costume americano

Almeno per quanto riguarda il cinema e la televisione. Chi non ricorda lo scandalo della cantante Jackson alla quale cadde per un nanosecondo il reggiseno in una finale di football e la nazione fu percorsa dai brividi puritani che misero in crisi la stazione televisiva e la stessa artista costretta a pagare una multa ed a scusarsi? Ma quando dalle grandi trasmittenti generaliste si passa a quelle via cavo allora l’America mostra il suo vero volto. In questi giorni sia sulle cable tv che nelle multisale cinematografiche proiettano films nei quali gli attori maschi sono ripresi nella loro intimità più nascosta. Esibizionismo a tutto campo. Con soggettisti e registi che discettano pubblicamente su come debbano essere fatte le inquadrature, in quale stato di grazia e via analizzando. Ed anche questa è America.

President Obama said Wednesday morning that he decided to release a long form of his birth certificate because the conspiracy theory over where he was born had eclipsed the debate on the budget. "We do not have time for this kind of silliness," Obama told reporters. "I've got better stuff to do."

Obama said that while the parties debate their fiscal policies, people can’t be "making stuff up" and providing "sideshows and carnival barkers."

Obama: Kill the Oil Subsidies

Seizing on the hint of bipartisanship offered by House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) on Monday, President Obama kick-started a new attempt to axe the $4 billion in tax breaks granted to oil and gas companies ever year. Boehner appeared to agree with President Obama on Monday, saying that Congress could look at the subsidies. "If sustained, these high prices have the potential to slow down the pace of our economy's growth at precisely the moment when we need to be accelerating it," Obama said in a letter to congressional leaders released by the White House. Obama claimed the money saved by ending the tax breaks could be invested in clean energy, and also could help temper U.S. dependence on foreign oil. The remarks by Obama and Boehner come as the cost of gasoline in many cities has ballooned in recent weeks, passing $4a gallon in some locations.

Water, Water, Water and Rotary Club of Washington DC

Rotary Club members from Washington and Paris gathered in mid-April for cultural exchange and something greater—entering the global policy arena for water. To kick off the initiative, they assembled 24 ambassadors along with leaders from the development community at the National Press Club in Washington to participate in the International Summit on Water in Developing Countries.

Don Marx, president of the DC Rotary club, said that “traditionally our role has been as an implementing partner at the country level or at the community level, so we are kind of notching it up one and saying we want to play at the national and global policy level.”

That ambition comes from a successful past. Rotary spearheads the lauded, ongoing campaign to eradicate polio. At the start of the initiative in 1985, polio infected over 350,000 children annually; just 1,700 cases were reported in 2009.

The enthusiasm for a repeat with water, sanitation, and hygiene may need to be tempered, however. Solving the water problem is “significantly more complicated than eradicating a single disease like polio,” says John Oldfield, managing director at the WASH Advocacy Initiative. He said that there are “lots of concerns, which Rotary is upfront about, around sustainability.”

Ron Denham, chair of WASRAG, a group within Rotary working on water issues, says that fewer than 30 percent of the water systems installed in developing countries over the last five years are still performing. He cited equipment shortages, lack of access to spare parts and inadequate technical expertise as reasons for the poor record. When those factors combine, he said, “the result is a disaster.”

Il New York Times ha totalizzato centomila abbonamenti da quando l'accesso al sito
del quotidiano e' divenuto a pagamento, tre settimane fa. Ad annunciarlo' e' stata Janet Robinson, presidente della NYTimes Company, che comprende l'omonimo quotidiano, il Boston Globe, l'International Herald Tribune ed altre pubblicazioni. La 'svolta' era stata decisa il 28 marzo scorso, per tentare di risanare le finanze dello storico quotidiano. I risultati del primo trimestre, tuttavia, continuano a non essere soddisfacenti: il profitto netto, ha reso noto il gruppo, e' crollato del 57.6 per cento, attestandosi a 5.5 milioni di dollari a causa della "debolezza prolungata del mercato pubblicitario Usa". Mentre i ricavi complessivi sono scesi del
3.6 per cento e ammontanto a 566.5 milioni. Tuttavia, il mercato online sembra in crescita. Se i ricavi della pubblicita' stampata hanno subito un calo del 7.5 per
cento, infatti, quelli dell'advertising online sono saliti del 4.5. Gli abbonati digitali del NYTimes hanno superato quota centomila, ha riferito il gruppo, e "i primi indicatori sono rassicuranti". Attualmente esistono diverse possibilita' di
abbonamento all'antico quotidiano - fondato nel 1851 - a partire da 15 dollari al mese. I non abbonati possono invece consultare fino a un massimo di 20 articoli in trenta giorni.(AGI)
