60% Of China Southern's Airbus A380 Fleet Has Now Been Flown To Be Scrapped

Story by Tom Boon

Athird China Southern Airbus A380 will likely never be flown again after the airline ferried it to the Mojave Desert last week. The aircraft is expected to be scrapped alongside its sisters after China Southern operated its final flight with the giant of the skies in early November.

China Southern goes against the grain when it comes to Airbus A380 operators. It was the only airline that didn't ground its double-decker giants during the pandemic. However, despite running the giant quad jets throughout aviation's worst crisis, the Chinese carrier is retiring its fleet of five aircraft now that the industry is recovering.

One more A380 says farewell

On Friday, it was the turn of B-6138, the middle of the five A380s, to say goodbye to its owner of over a decade. The giant aircraft operated its last passenger flight on October 12th, CZ 326, from Sydney (SYD) to Guangzhou (CAN).

After around two months on the ground in China, the aircraft said its final farewell on Friday. It departed from Guanzhou at 12:10 on December 2nd, landing at Victorville Airport (VCV) 12 hours and 39 minutes later at 08:48.

The plane likely stopped in Victorville to complete immigration and customs formalities, as Mojave is not listed as a port of entry by CBP. Like its sisters, after a short stay in Victorville, the aircraft continued to Mojave Air & Space Port (MHV), where it landed at 12:29 after a 22-minute hop. The aircraft will now likely be reregistered on the US N-registry before being scrapped in Mojave. On the same day that this A380 took its final flight, Lufthansa took its 1st Airbus A380 out of storage.
