Outline and objectives of the Seminar

The OLAF Anti-Fraud Communicators Network (OAFCN)[1] plays a pivotal role in communicating to the public the threat of fraud affecting the EU financial interests, its effect and the efforts made by the National and European investigative authorities to combat this kind of fraud.

The OAFCN main purpose is to prevent fraud through the “free-flow” of information (“prevention is better than cure”).

For the 8th OAFCN seminar on 12-14 October 2008 in Nicosia, entitled “Anti-Fraud Communication and Web 2.0: new technologies, new tools, new audiences”, the theme chosen by the OAFCN members is how new communication tools in Anti-fraud matters can be applied in order to more effectively communicate the efforts made by European Institutions, EU Member States and Third Countries in the fight against EU fraud.

The Seminar will focus on how to harness the new generation internet for the trans-border fight against fraud and corruption affecting the EU’s financial interests. The seminar will discuss how far blogs, video-sharing, virtual social-networking, wikis and other new communication tools and channels can contribute to reaching new audiences for OLAF and its operational partners in the EU and beyond. Experts will give an update on the latest developments in the field and the experiences of national and international anti-fraud agencies will be shared. What have been the challenges, the difficulties, and what are the practical solutions?
