Washington, DC - Today, Congressman Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), Assistant to the Speaker, issued the following statement on the White House Summit on Fiscal Responsibility:
“After the last 8 years, there is no question that we have inherited an economic nightmare. But Democrats are committed to putting our fiscal house in order. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act was the first piece of this puzzle, providing much needed tax relief to 95 percent of middle-class Americans and making critical investments in our economy. The President’s plan to tackle the housing crisis was the next piece, and will help millions avoid foreclosure while getting the housing market back on track. Today’s fiscal responsibility summit was yet another piece of President Obama’s comprehensive plan, a long overdue conversation about the best way forward to a sustainable economic future for our country.
“It took 8 years of bad economic policies to create this mess and we won’t get out of it overnight. But under the leadership of President Obama we are finally putting America on a path to overcome this economic crisis. This Congress will work day and night with the Administration to restore fiscal responsibility, create jobs, and lay the foundation for long-term economic growth. ”
