PRIME Minister of Australia, Kevin Rudd, should launch an investigation into the leaking of details of a sensitive phone call he had with US President George W Bush, former foreign minister Alexander Downer says.
Details of the call to discuss the global financial crisis were reported last week in The Weekend Australian. During the call, Mr Bush reportedly responded to Mr Rudd's suggestion of a G20 summit to deal with the crisis by saying: "What's the G20?''. US officials and Mr Rudd's office have since denied Mr Bush made any such remark. But today, The Daily Telegraph reported senior Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade diplomats were concerned that the leak may damage Australia's alliance with the US.
