BREAKING: McCain's farewell statement to the nation includes veiled criticism of Trump

Sen. John McCain, who died Saturday, left a farewell statement to the country with thinly veiled criticism of President Donald Trump that was read to the public on Monday by one of the Arizona Republican's former top aides.

Speaking of the country's best qualities, McCain wrote that "we weaken our greatness" by equating "patriotism with tribal rivalries" that "sow resentment and hatred and violence in all corners of the world."

"We weaken it when we hide behind walls, rather than tear them down, when we doubt the power of our ideas rather than trust them to be the great force for change they have always been," McCain said in the statement, which was read by his friend and former campaign manager, Rick Davis, in Phoenix. The statement didn't mention Trump by name.
