Jim Mattis, a former Marine Corps general who has headed
the Defense Department since President Donald Trump took office,
announced he is resigning at the end of February.
There have been several recent reports that he fell out of the
president's favor due to disagreements on military issues.
In his resignation letter, Mattis implicitly criticized Trump
for not treating allies with respect and for not being "clear-eyed"
about U.S. enemies and competitors.
