An
estimated 126 million Americans, roughly one-third of the nation’s
population, were exposed to Russian-backed content on Facebook during
the 2016 campaign, according to prepared testimony the company
submitted Monday to the Senate Judiciary Committee and obtained by NBC
News.
The
testimony showed that the 80,000 or so fake Russian-backed pages were
widely liked and shared by Facebook users, meaning that three times
more people saw it than the original recipients. The testimony is part
of the congressional inquiry into Russia’s use of social media
platforms to try to influence last year’s U.S. presidential election.
