At
least eight people are dead and a male suspect is in custody after he
deliberately drove a rented truck onto a bike path in lower Manhattan,
hitting several bicyclists and a schoolbus. The suspect got out of the truck
and shouted "Allahu Akbar" while brandishing what appeared to be
weapons. He was taken to a local hospital after being shot by police.
The
incident was "a particularly cowardly act of terror," said New York
Mayor Bill de Blasio at a news conference. “We know this action was intended
to test our spirit," he said.
