Ciao, Lucia !

La chiesa del  Santo Rosario  piena di  parenti e amici, ex colleghi della Banca Mondiale, e poi i figli:  tre femmine ed un maschio.
La splendida voce di Maria Marigliano  ha creato una commovente atmosfera durante la cerimonia  funebre  per ricordare Lucia Grenna, dirigente della World Bank.
Dopo la Messa celebrata da padre Ezio in inglese e in italiano, ci siamo riuniti tutti nel salone della Casa Italiana adiacente.
Questa è stata l'occasione per ricordare con brevi interventi Lucia, una forza della natura che ha lasciato un ricordo molto bello in coloro che hanno avuto la ventura di conoscerla e frequentarla sia per ragioni  personali che di lavoro.
Tra questi abbiamo scelto quello di Jill Wilkins che di Lucia è stata  una  grande amica  oltre che boss.

My name is Jill Wilkins.

     For the past few years at the World Bank, I have worked hard to be Lucia's boss, to the extent that ANYONE could ever be Lucia's boss. And like others who went before me, I learned quickly that Lucia was not one for bosses in the traditional sense. Her approach was to work with people she respected and who respected her back. There were no bosses in Lucia's world — only partners who could see her vision and work without rest to make it happen. And many times in the decade or so that we worked together, I saw magic happen. There was the time in 2013 that Lucia and her team orchestrated a musical collaboration about climate change between young rappers from Nairobi's Kibera slum and their hero, Eminem. The result of that collaboration was beamed up in Times Square along with a message from World Bank President Jim Kim. Only Lucia could conceive of such a thing - and then pull it off.There was the time when Lucia secretly arranged a flash mob by theater students from the University of Maryland to interrupt President Kim - who was giving a speech that she asked him to give at her climate event in front of a large World Bank audience. We decided not to tell the President, which some colleagues thought was a very bad idea. We learned later that he absolutely loved it. Again, only Lucia! Of course who can forget the magnificent projections of a blue planet and a gorgeous tiger we saw beamed onto the exterior of the Vatican, with the Pope's blessing? Not to mention the full week of creative events at the recent G7 Environment Ministers' meeting in Bologna, Italy. Everything — from the all 4thegreen hashtag to diCaprio's film being projected on a giant screen in the main piazza — was classic Lucia.

   

Lucia was never one to be content with a few thousand hits on a website. She wanted to reach millions, if not billions, with the climate message. And over and over again she and her amazing team did that — through vehicles of popular culture like music, film, photography or fashion. She found celebrity activists, sports icons and other global influencers to carry her message. And I can't be the only one who noticed that in all of those photos on Facebook and Twitter, it always seemed to be the celebrity who was more in awe of meeting Lucia than the other way around. Lucia fervently believed that we had to reach young people to get the change the world needs. She was passionate about connecting young people from developing countries with the information they needed and finding creative ways for them to reach a global audience. This is the thinking that   drove Connect4Climate from its earliest days and it's the reason it is now a vibrant social movement that literally reaches millions. Lucia also believed that to reach young people, you have to hire young, smart, creative people and then keep them inspired and challenged. She had a brilliant knack for persuading students coming out of film school or university to work with her. And her legacy is now all around you in the many young people who heeded her call.

To Satya, Ginevra, Nicholas and Vittoria, I believe you know this already, but you were the world to your mom. She talked about you all the time and shared photos and stories of your accomplishments. She was so very proud of you. In many ways, her quest for a better planet and her determination to make it happen right here, right now, was driven by what she wanted for you. That's why she was sometimes impatient and frustrated and why she felt she needed to break through all the stuffy bureaucracy around her. It was all about a better and safer place for you - and for all young people. Like many people whose lives Lucia touched, I am so sad today. She was funny, generous and kind. Throughout the time we worked together, she always inspired me, always challenged me and always, made me see the world differently.

The world has lost a shining light for the climate. And we have all lost a dear friend.But I know that Lucia's passion and energy will live on in the movement that she created. We will continue to be inspired by Lucia and strive, like her, to make the impossible possible.

Jill Wilkins

Negli ultimi anni ho lavorato duramente come capo di Lucia sapendo che nessuno avrebbe potuto essere il capo di Lucia. E come gli altri che mi hanno preceduto ho imparato velocemente che Lucia non era adatta per un capo nel senso tradizionale dell'espressione. Il suo approccio era quello di lavorare con persone che la rispettassero e che lei rispettava. Non c'erano Boss nel mondo di Lucia ma soltanto dei partners che potevano capire la sua visione e lavorare senza tregua perché ciò avvenisse. Molte volte durante gli ultimi 10 anni abbiamo lavorato insieme ed io ho visto che la magia si verificava.

C'è stata una volta nel 2013 quando Lucia e il suo team hanno messo su una collaborazione musicale che riguardava il cambiamento climatico tra un gruppo di Rappers dei bassifondi Kibera di Nairobi con il loro eroe, Eminem. Il risultato di quella collaborazione fu inserito in Times Square insieme ad un messaggio del presidente della Banca Mondiale. Soltanto Lucia poteva concepire una cosa simile e c'è riuscita.

C'è stato poi un tempo in cui Lucia segretamente ha messo su una sorta di protesta teatrale degli studenti dell'università del Maryland per interrompere il presidente Kim che stava tenendo un discorso che lei gli aveva chiesto di fare sul cambiamento del clima di fronte ad un pubblico molto numeroso della Banca Mondiale.

Decidemmo di non dirlo al presidente dato anche che alcuni colleghi pensavano che fosse una cattiva idea. Più tardi ci siamo resi conto che lui aveva gradito. Ancora una volta soltanto Lucia.

E come è possibile ovviamente dimenticare le proiezioni magnifiche di un pianeta blu e quella tigre spettacolare che abbiamo visto riprodotta sull'esterno del Vaticano con la benedizione del Papa?

Per non menzionare la piena settimana di eventi creativi che si è tenuta recentemente al meeting dei ministri dell'ambiente a Bologna, Italia. Tutto dal filmato del 4thegreen al film di DiCaprio proiettati su uno schermo gigante nella piazza principale di Bologna era un classico di Lucia.

Lucia non era mai soddisfatta di avere migliaia di contatti su il suo sito. Lei voleva raggiungere milioni se non miliardi con il messaggio del clima. E spesso lei e il suo incredibile team sono riusciti a realizzarlo attraverso i veicoli della cultura popolare come la musica il film La fotografia o la moda.

Lei ha trovato celebri icone dello sport ed altri personaggi che influenzavano a livello globale per far portare loro i suoi messaggi e non posso essere l'unica ad aver notato che in tutte queste foto su Facebook e Twitter vi era sempre una celebrità che era più interessata a incontrarsi con Lucia che con altri.

Lucia fervidamente credeva che bisogna raggiungere i giovani per avere il necessario cambiamento mondiale. Lei era appassionata nel cercare di connettere i giovani delle nazioni in via di sviluppo attraverso l'informazione di cui avevano bisogno e trovando delle audience di livello globale.

Questa era la linea di fondo che ha guidato Connect4climate sino dai suoi primi giorni e questa è la ragione per la quale oggi è diventato un movimento che letteralmente raggiunge milioni di persone.

Lucia inoltre credeva che per raggiungere i giovani bisogna assumere giovani intelligenti e creativi e lasciare che essi si sentano ispirati e sfidati. Lei aveva un modo brillante di persuadere gli studenti a venir fuori dalle scuole di cinematografia o dalle università per lavorare con lei. La sua eredità è oggi intorno a voi, rappresentata da tanti giovani che hanno risposto al suo richiamo.

A Satya, Ginevra, Nicholas e Vittoria so bene che lo avete ben presente, voi siete stati il mondo della vostra mamma. Lei parlava di voi ogni volta e ci faceva vedere le foto e raccontava storie di quello che voi riuscivate a fare. Era molto orgogliosa di voi e il suo impegno per un pianeta migliore e la sua determinazione perché questo potesse avvenire oggi era guidata anche da quello che lei voleva per voi. Ecco perché talvolta poteva sembrare impaziente e frustrata perché lei sentiva di dover mettere un punto alla burocrazia oppressiva intorno a lei.

Tutto era per realizzare un posto migliore e più sicuro per voi e per tutti i giovani. Come per tante persone la cui vita è stata toccata da Lucia anche io oggi sono molto triste.

Lei era generosa e gentile. Per tutto il tempo durante il quale abbiamo lavorato insieme lei mi ha sempre ispirata mi ha sempre sfidata e mi ha fatto sentire il mondo in una maniera diversa.

Il mondo ha perduto una luce scintillante per il clima. E noi abbiamo perduto una carissima amica. Ma io so che la passione e l'energia di Lucia sopravviveranno nel movimento che lei ha creato.

Noi continueremo ad essere inspirati da Lucia e a cercare di far sì che l'impossibile diventi possibile come le riusciva fare.

Non sapevo che vi sareste riuniti dopo alla Casa Italiana, se e’ stato detto io non l’ho sentito, peccato, e’ bello il discorso che hai pubblicato. Comunque mi ha fatto piacere vedere la chiesa stracolma di amici, bravo Max che ha orchestrato.

Caro Oscar,

non credo di averla conosciuta nei miei soggiorni a Washington ma la testimonianza del suo boss mi ha dato l’idea del suo spirito potente, della sua grande energia e della forza per realizzare l’impossibile: una persona veramente speciale e sono certa che Max che ha avuto il privilegio di conoscerla e lavorarci insieme possa seguirne le orme: la notte dell’8 dicembre 2016 a Piazza San Pietro io c’ero e non la dimenticherò mai!
